My Year of Watching Too Many Films: Favorites from the First 100

Once I started getting into film subscriptions, then writing reviews, I have felt more and more aware of the deficits in my movie watching I have. Granted, everyone does, but not everyone has the privilege of 1) lots of time, 2) a completionist impulse, and 3) a ton of streaming services. So I decided earlier this year to try to watch 366 films in 366 days.

My goal is now to hit 400 new-to-me films by the end of 2020. My main focus is to fill in gaps in terms of classics, both domestic and international, but I’ll also watch modern classics and just whatever else makes me interested. Every hundred, I plan to post the list ordered by star ratings. I hope that this helps you find some films to pass the time while we’re all stuck in our homes!

Just a few quick thoughts on my first 100. The biggest revelation so far has been the brilliance of Asian directors like Bong Joon-ho, Edward Yang, and Kurosawa. I’m so glad that I actually enjoy subtitles. The second half of the 2010s has become one of my favorite few years of cinema ever. So many good films lately. And wow, Wild Wild West is as bad as everyone says.
